Comments:
The first night was great: low noise, fast rates, some DX, but
terrible crowding and too many stations with too many key clicks. I
ran the first couple of hours before I realized that the right channel
audio was missing. Apparently I didn't notice the absence of signals
to my west. Wiggling a cable fixed the audio. I stayed up all night
using the recliner for the wee hours so that I could doze off. I
think I dozed twice but some caller woke me up. If you could tell I
was asleep at the key, let me know!
KH6ZM called at 0328Z which seems pretty early. By DX Atlas on the
big (old) monitor on the wall, it looked like he called about 2 hours
before his sunset.
I finished the first 15 hours with a best ever 1200 QSOs in the log
although the multiplier count was very low.
The second night was terrible: high noise, slow rates, virtually no
DX, but still terrible crowding and too many status with too many key
clicks. Again I stayed awake all night in the recliner and I'm
certain that the doze periods were longer because of the gaps in the
log. On the other hand, I was always at the radio.
The second night came with a couple of consolations: unexpected QSOs
with KL7SB, CO2AN and HC2AO all within 15 minutes of each other and
all new multipliers and a sunrise surprise from JH2FXK for the elusive
JA multiplier on 1832 kHz.
Sparse list of DX worked: 9A, C6, CM (2), CT, CT3, DL (13), E7, EA
(4), EA6, F (4), G (6), GM, GW, HA (3), HC, I (4), JA, LY (2), LZ, OH
(2), OH0, OK (5), OM (3), ON (3), PA (4), S5 (3), SM (6), SP (3), UA
(2), UR (6), V3, XE (2), YL (2), and ZF (2) for a total of 94 QSOs
with 34 entities.
Lots of stateside stations to work but not so much DX. It seemed like
DX stations out to about 9000 km were fairly loud but anything beyond
that was completely absent. I'm going to guess everyone had a good
time during the CQWW and got their fill of working North American
stations. Also, maybe sunspots.

The annual analysis suggests that the number of US stations is roughly
constant while the amount of DX participation varies a lot. But it
looks like we must try again in 11 years for another 2009.
I didn't mention my phased array receiver project. I've made a little
progress between work related death marches. I have 7 receivers
working and the beam steering software functions. I need to build a
couple more receivers so that I can connect all of the short verticals
to the new electronics and integrate the new software with my station.
I'm hoping to get some vacation time before the Stew Perry test.
Equipment: K3S, P3, Alpha 8410 loafing at 800 watts most of the time.
K3 and P3 second receiver. 61-foot (formerly 66-foot) "Tee" top
vertical over 75 or fewer radials. 2x4 BS-EF phased array and
receiver contraption and another 2x3 BS-EF contraption. For spotting
a pair of short verticals in an end-fire configuration to cancel my
transmit signal. 6 2-wire Beverages ranging from 500 to 900 feet,
some of which even work but few were used. I use the 150 degree
Beverage to watch for signals on the P3 from the south that the phased
arrays often miss. Also the Eu Beverage did not seem to hear as much
QRN as did the phased array.
