Comments:
Had a blast! The format is very US centric with the start on Saturday 1pm (EST
local) and as a single op you can only operate 24 of the 30 hours. That meant I
could choose to sleep for almost 6 hours... very civilized.
Lots of RTTY activity for the entire contest period with multiple bands having
activity at once which really helps spread things out. Even the FT guys were
spread out from their usual watering holes.
Used the call history file and thought it was wrong more than usual. Hope I was
careful on every QSO! Especially with the snowbirds who have apparently already
migrated to FL. I also noticed there were lots of callers who weren't in the
call history at all, so maybe that holds good things for expanding interest in
contesting and for RTTY newcomers.
Who were those guys in PA? They were everywhere, so GO PVRC or FRC for the club
competition.
My only operating issue, if you can call it that, occurred when trying to log
HI, AK, VI, PR stations who properly gave me their serial number as the
exchange. Every one of those contact came up as "invalid exchange" in
N1MM Logger+ and I had to override to log anyway. Didn't check to see if they
scored correctly.
Almost had the WAS in a 24 hr contest, but never heard ND ;o( Wasn't even close
on working all the CA provinces, with only 7 (50%) in the log. I did hear LB but
the pile up was too big to waste time in and when I tried to go back the call
had already disappeared from the spot I put in the bandmap... should have gone
low tech with paper and pencil.
YCCC doesn't get excited about RTTY but it was good to see and work other
members in RTTY mode.
In the category of funny moment, at one point Sunday I was looking around while
my macro was sending and I noticed the breadboard circuit on my bench was
"active" with no power to it. I'm building an ESR meter to test
electrolytic caps and the meter in that circuit would slightly deflect every
time I transmitted. The 1N34As were rectifying my RF and causing the meter to
move. Entertaining crystal radio.
Hats off to AA3B, AC0C, and W7RN who are obviously contesting machines! And,
how about Randy K5ZD who is right up there with only 12 hours in the contest...
you guys are an inspiration!
Thanks to ARRL for sponsorship and to everyone who called me. Most fun I've had
in awhile and a great way to start 2021!
73,
Rich N1IXF
