Almost missed the start. Kept thinking 11:00 AM local time. Yeah, that's the
summer edition. I only realized it at 9:45 when I started reviewing the rules. I
got everything powered up and running just before the start time. Good thing I
did check it all out ealier in the week. Of course, the question you should be
asking is... why didn't you check out the rules earlier in the week.
15M started out like a bat out hell. I had fun for about 2 hours though the last
half hour some local noise (very broadband) started up. It moved the meter from
S0 up to S1. Doesn't sound bad except most people were in a S0-S2 range. It was
still a lot of fun. Can't say I have enjoyed 15 like that in a LONG time.
I moved to 20 after a couple hours and splat! I couldn't run. Lots of stations
but I couldn't sustain a run. I started S&Ping and had some success there
but it was hard breaking pileups. It was quite the change from 15. 20M is
usually a strong band for me. Very frustrating. I picked up as many mults as I
could before finally heading for 40M after a couple hours of pounding my head
against the wall.
40M was great! This was really weird but I was running again. After a couple
hours in on 40M I was staring at my antenna rotator controllers and... Oh my
gosh, the 20M beam was pointed straight north! I had been trying to work the
country off the side of my 20M during my time on that band. Somehow, I had
gotten my 20M and 40M controllers mixed up in my mind (which is hard because one
is Green Heron and the other is HyGain). Oh the stupidity of it all.
In the end, 40M was nice. It's usually a competition between 40 and 20 for best
band. Not this year. I guess I should be happy I picked up as many mults on 20
as I did. Could have been much better though.
I do like this test but lesson learned.
