Comments:
This may have been our most complex remote operation yet, with six stations in
use (though not all at once) and ten operators, six remote and two
in-person/socially distanced. As not all ops had the capability to connect to
any of the stations, this presented a confounding Rubik's cube of constraints,
but Ken N6RO and Bob K3EST hammered out a workable plan and assembled a great
team, including rookie Rob K6KM, on his maiden CW voyage at N6RO.
As we remote more, we get more comfortable with it, though our handoff procedure
is still being refined. Several technical issues arose as well, including
rotator problems (20m, 40m) and some inter-station interference, but we were
mostly able to side-step these. Harder to work around were the band conditions,
particularly on the lower bands, which started OK but degraded as the weekend
progressed. On the other hand, 15m was better than last year.
Despite these challenges, we had a great time, with lots of camaraderie. Using
Slack to communicate, it was almost like being in the shack together; you could
almost hear the mult horn! While the West Coast is not the optimal QTH for this
contest, we were able to harvest all but a handfull of the spotted mults and
made the most of the Japanese participation, which we always greatly
appreciate... 1446 Qs with Japan, or 51% of our total QSOs!
The last time we did M/M from N6RO was 2019. Despite this year's mult numbers
being down, we exceeded our 2019 score on every band except 80m. We're
privileged to be able to continue our contesting passion during these pandemic
times and have the opportunity to travel the world through DX, while safely
sheltering at home. Many thanks to Ken N6RO for hosting us, and to Chris N6WM,
Gary NA6O and Bill W9KKN for station and operator support. Also, many thanks to
the team for using my call sign for this one.
Band breakdown:
10m K3EST, K6AW - Not quite ready for prime time, but better than last year.
Mostly South America, some Caribbean, Pacific, ZL. One AF (ZD7)
15m N6WM, K7GK - Significantly better than recent years. Chris N6WM led off and
reports, that the kickoff was "a rush," with an excellent Asia-Pacific
run. Saturday required hard work, with many weak signals right at the noise
floor, including Scandinavian mults at our noon-time, followed by good QSO
volume with another JA run. Denis K7GK took over on Sunday with disappointing EU
conditions, but then continued to run JAs until the last minute.
20m K3EST, K6AW - Along with 40, one of our two "money bands," which
coincidentally ended with exactly the same score. The K3EST/K6AW 20 meter team
did their usual thorough job draining the 20m band of mults and QSOs. Conditions
were good until 8 am Sunday when things collapsed. Lots of JA activity. Nice to
work XU, XV, 9M2, HS and 9V. Conditions were ok to Europe except deep, and the
Baltic was missing. Band closed about 7 pm local time each day.
40m WD6T, WA6O
Dave WD6T operated the first half of each night and Mike WA6O the second. 40m
started with a good opening to Europe, and it was possible to run for a while.
EU propagation gradually deteriorated, though it was still possible to S&P,
and there was a weak EU sunrise enhancement. Mike WA6O reports that "first
night JA run started right away and was good for several hours," followed
by an LP opening to EU at our sunrise. The second night's propagation was
significantly worse to both EU and Asia.
80m NT6V, K6KM, WX5S
Michael NT6V took the first evening, Rob K6KM the second, and Matt WX5S the late
shift on both nights. 80m propagation followed the same pattern observed on 40m.
First night, excellent sunset peak to EU. Then waves lasting 5min at a time
allowing to keep logging mults until EU sunrise. No noticeable sunrise
enhancement on central/east EU. UK stations came up slightly to log a few at
their sunrise. JA runs were decent, with more than half of the 80m QSOs with
Japan. A highlight was working P3AA long path at our sunrise. Like 40m, the
second night was generally difficult and slow.
160m N6RO, K7GK, K6AW and WD6T
Ken N6RO did his patented deep dive of 160, with a little help from his friends.
K7GK bagged some Caribbean mults Friday evening and N6RO took over at 10z.
Saturday morning, he got two mults, but just a few JAs. Sunday morning, WD6T
got 14 JAs in the 09z hour, then N6RO got about 20 more, all the way to sunrise.
JA total was 41, again more than half of all QSOs on that band. Highlight was
the last Q Sunday morning: BY.
