Comments:
What a neat and fun last minute group! Leading up to the contest a lot of work
by Marty, NN1C and Bill, W9KKN, had been put in to remoting ZF1A. As a team we
had collectively followed their lead and simply asked where to send the check?
The boys clearly put together an amazing remote setup with Dan, N6MJ, setting a
new ARRL DX CW record for Q's, best hourly rate, and total score just two weeks
a go. I realized that I wasn't so fired up for a remote multi and Dan was
willing to step in for me, giving up the SOAB we had planned for him here.
So what do you do with a new station that has no operator staffed? You get a
hold of the local AOCC heavy hitters and plead with them to make the drive from
the valley! We had an amazing time continuing to learn what is possible from
this station and as a team. John - W4IX came back off of his excellent SOAB(A)
in the CW flavor. Steve - AA7V rejoined us on Saturday night bringing some
serious pileup busting skills. New comer veteran Mike - KC7V made his inaugural
appearance for the full weekend with us blending right in with what was needed
of him. The boys brought together different skill-sets and a can do attitude
which equated into some awesome teamwork.
We were fortunate to get what seemed to be a never ending and disciplined
Asia/Oceana 40M run starting in their broad daylight during night one. On Sunday
morning, KC7V was S&Ping with his partner on 20m using the interlocked
IC7610's. He happened across a decently QRM laden frequency that was better than
the others. He asked his partner to run em... and run em they did! It was a
great EU opening for a south western experience.
The panadapters on the IC7610's continued to provide a great advantage in
operating such crowded bands. The on board DVK's were easy to setup (even during
the contest) and were easily employed with DXLog. Thanks goes to Ray, N9JA for
nudging us in this direction!
We have expanded our foreseen transmitters and I asked each operator to bring
their own headset with CoVid in mind. We had some issues with setting up some
Yamaha CM500's... however the Inrad W1's worked perfectly... nothing that a
judicious use of Lysol between operator changes couldn't help with!
I feel very fortunate that so many great operators want to come experience the
station here. We have a great roster for WPX SSB coming up next with Chris -
KL9A's legendary smoked meat to top it off. How can one not love multi operator
contesting?
