Comments:
With no one else interested in a multi-op effort, I decided to try operating
assisted since the few times I've operated in ARRL DX SSB recently have either
been unassisted or in a multi-op. My naive assumption was that I would work many
more mults than I had unassisted.
Instead I was down 10 or more mults on each of 80, 40 and 20 from last year's
unassisted effort. Fewer DXpeditions due to the pandemic contributed a little to
the reduction but the biggest factor was the reduction in European mults on all
3 bands due to dismal propagation on 80 and 40 and overcrowding on 20 during our
European opening.
In better years many of the stations on 20 would have migrated to 15 or 10,
leaving open spaces for others to run on 20. Instead, with everyone jammed
together on 20, it frequently required multiple repeats to complete QSOs.
I was never able to work several of the loudest EU stations because they had
huge pileups of W/VE callers to our east. Weaker stations from the most common
countries were most easily worked.
I tried to plan off-times so that I could work EU mults on 40 and 80 on the
second evening. Early in the evening I worked several on 40 but then they all
disappeared. I heard one EU, EB5A, on 80 around his sunrise but he CQed in my
face. After EU sunrise I gave up and went home to sleep for a few hours. Based
on K3EST's comments I must have been sleeping both days when he had EU call
him.
On 160 and 10 I didn't get any answers to CQs but did find several stations on
both bands that hadn't been spotted, including a few mults on 160. Most of the
time I couldn't hear any of the stations spotted on either band as the spots
came from spotters in the east.
I ended up with 40 more claimed Qs than last year but 34 fewer mults, reducing
the score by more than 100K points. The big difference in QSO count was nearly
100 Asian Qs on 15m compared to a single JA last year. I noticed that 9M7DX is
listed in West Malaysia instead of East Malaysia in the CTY.DAT file so I
corrected it which added a mult.
Hopefully we have better propagation during WPX SSB.
