Comments:
First contest not from home in a year! Got my vaccine 2 weeks prior to the
contest and K9ZO invited me to come down and operate since we could do so safely
now.
My original goal was for 2.5M, 2500Q and 700 WPX.
On Friday, we got the station setup and configured and did a little testing
beforehand in which we discovered a bad jumper cable and external wattmeter that
was causing intermittent SWR jumps. Fixed that and went to Lil Beaver for dinner
and a couple beers.
Friday night was real good in terms of rate, with several hours of 100+. Finally
took a nap break around 3AM local and woke up late for the Saturday EU opening
on 20. I haven't gotten any kind of real decent sleep for the past 3 months, so
I came into the contest already tired. Managed to catch some brief 10 meter
openings Saturday and spent some time on 15. Could not find a clear spot to run
on 20 so did aggressive S&P. Operated all of Saturday and Sat. night.
Intended to take a nap break around 2AM local, but could not fall asleep so
decided to get back on and CQ. Managed to be on 20 in time for the EU opening
but after an hour couldn't hold the run frequency. Was finally able Sunday
afternoon to find a freq on 20 and had a decent run of EU, then swung the beam
towards JA and had west coast, JA, HL, BY call in.
Thanks to K9ZO and Connie for the hospitality as always, great food and a good
time. This is another personal best for me in Single Op.
According to SH5 analysis, rates were:
10 min - 38Q, 3.8/min, 228/hr 03/27 0123Z - 0133Z
60 min - 192Q, 3.2/min, 192/hr 03/27 0119Z - 0218Z
120 min - 300Q, 2.5/min, 150/hr 03/27 0106Z - 0306Z
94 DXCC worked
58% USA. I tried to keep up with some of the East Coast stations on the
scoreboard and in order to do that realized that I needed to maximize DX mults
on the low bands. Had a handful of EU on 80, but due to storms I couldn't get
much on 160 and 80 so decided to concentrate on 40. Also when my rate would drop
I would go through the listing of mults to work and pick them off, then try to
find a place to CQ. Was interesting even to get a lot of WPX mults calling in
with low numbers (i.e. below 100). Really glad they got on!
Flex 6600, PGXL amplifier
SteppIR beam for 20/15/10
40/80/160 - wire antennas.
SAL 30 for RX, really helped on 160-40.
