Comments:
What a terrific weekend it was to be with all our good friends here in the shack
and around the globe on the radio. Conditions were terrific and we couldn’t
feel much from the CME until Sunday afternoon.
The weather in New Hampshire was terrible and it was perfect to be inside. We
had several inches of rain and with that came some rain static.
On Thursday before the contest, the motor on the 40 meter 4/4 full size rotating
tower quit. We didn’t have another motor of the same size on hand and we had
to modify the system with a smaller and weaker motor. It didn’t produce enough
torque to get the 40’s moving…….mhhhhh, now what? On Friday afternoon Dave
and Matt installed long ropes, about 4 meters out on each side of the boom of
the lower 40 meter antenna at 33 meters.
In the pouring rain, when 40 had to be turned, someone (KC1XX) had to go out and
help producing torque while someone inside turned the motor. It worked great all
weekend. It felt a little bit like walking the Hindenburg Zeppelin through my
back yard.
Other than the usual small hick up’s, the station held up great.
Earlier this fall, John W1FV and others helped us restring the 80 meter loops
that were severely damaged from last winter. The loops performed great for John
on 80 into all parts of the world.
Bob WA1Z is our 40 meter QSO machine. I have no idea how he puts up with the
noise for hours on end. He and I did 15 together and we had the rate way up
there.
Dave KM3T was his usual strength all weekend but showed his best performance
when ten opened on Sunday. I didn’t know that a human being can talk that
fast.
Craig K1QX is a terrific guy that always comes over at the right time when
someone needs a break. He sits down and makes sure things get done regardless of
what band we put him on.
Steve N1EZ was the new addition to the crew. He’s starting to like this
contesting stuff and he’s a great learner. We will get him up to speed as he
seems very enthusiastic. He’s also a good friend to have on the crew. Nice job
working a few of those mults, Steve.
We would like to give a special mention to “HG5KID”. When we called them,
some more experienced operator was behind a young operator teaching him or her
how to run. They are doing a great job getting kids into contesting and you
should look them up on QRZ.com.
Thanks to my wife Juana for keeping us well fed and making a Dominican Sancocho
on Sunday for us.
