Comments:
Sometimes, the best things in life are unplanned.
A week or so before this contest I was not sure where I was going to operate.
My regular haunt had station issues. Good friend Bray, KC1KUG, was also
looking for a slot. He had noticed that Stan, ZF9CW had not done this contest
in a while. So, he sent Stan an email. Stan said YES! When Bray told me
this news, I inquired if we might do a M/S. Again, Stan said yes.
However, we had a problem: Though he has exceptional antennas and RF setup in
the station, he only had one computer, as another had died in the CW contest.
This is where my computer and remote skills came in: I built a virtual machine
on his main computer, and so we ended up with two operating positions, both
available remotely.
Bray and I recently had dome a remote at LU8EOT/LO5D, Mark's station in
Argentina. Mark caught wind of our operation, and inquired if he could join
the team.
Since our remote setup was pretty easy to set for the remote ops, Kevin, N5DX,
Stan's son decided to join us and was remote from home.
This is the fantastic opportunity of remote: We can bring a diverse team of ops
together.
Anyway, the contest is history. Despite a K-index of 5 and a A index of 25, we
were able to put together a really decent operation. Our claimed score beat
the current World M/S LP record, but by a slim margin. We will see if this
holds.
To this 63-year-old op, I was in wonder of 16-year-old Bray, KC1KUG. In the
first hour of the contest he did a 275-hour, better than he had ever done in his
life, and opened 10m with a 307 hour on Saturday morning.
Our remote was pretty simple, using Anydesk (a remote desktop app), Mumble, a
low-latency client/server audio application, and a Hamachi VPN, which allowed us
to log locally from our remote locations if we preferred.
All of us who had not operated from his station before were blown away by what
can be done with 100w (actually 60-90w from the TS-590s')!
Even though we both have been contesting for more than 4 decades, Stan and my
paths had not crossed. What an incredible host and wealth of knowledge.
We spent many hours chatting on the Operator Chat channel our off times, and
told many war stories of contests past.
Thanks for the QSOs and the memories!
73,
Gerry W1VE (ZF2VE) with Bray KC1KUF (ZF2RX) Mark LU8EOT (ZF2WB) Kevin N5DX
(ZD2DX)
and Stan, ZF9CW
