Thank you to those that called us and to those we called. There were a handful
of stations that we simply couldn't pull out of the noise (not for the lack of
trying) but maybe some of them worked us later. We always let partial callsigns
know that they are 'Not in Log' if we can't make the QSO. It's gratifying to
hear the effort that the /P /QRP operators put in and we really do our best to
work them all but sometimes it's just not possible.
This contest was the first 'proper' contest since the station rebuild. Last
month's IARU tested 160m and 80m. New antenna switching, buried cabling, antenna
rotator controllers, solid state and tube amplifiers, PCs, headsets etc.
Everything needed a shakedown and IOTA provided it. We had no failures per se
but the electricity company around Wisbech and into Norfolk had multiple grid
failures. With approx. ten power outages, we lost around 1 1/2 hours on Sunday
morning.
Careful Relocation of all of the towers plus the good work outlined above means
we can run and mult within 10-20 kHz of second harmonics across all bands
without either op noticing. I'm sure that there are some red harmonic
pairings/antenna bearings but none seen so far.
We're all a bit rusty (or at least we were) on this 5 band mixed mode team
event. Although a fairly competitive entry for a vanilla G EU-05, this was
primarily a training and station test event for all of us and especially our new
team member, Chris, 2E0DLG. We have one or two minor tweaks to make before the
Autumn/Winter series of tests(technical tweaks not tweaks to Chris).
Propagation was generally very good for us. Plenty of OC and AS mults as well as
EUs and NAs. I was the CW op and had a great time, especially on 20m and 15m. If
it was on my bandmap, I could work it. There is nothing quite like busting a
huge pile-up with your first call is there? Contrary to that is the slog that we
put in on 80m SSB. It was really hard work for all concerned....except, perhaps,
for the team CW op :-).
Andy (M0CHK) and his brother, Jim (M0CKE), have invested endless hours on the
station and it shows. Bring on the CQ series of tests. We'll be doing a mix of
M1 and SOAB entries.
