Comments:
The team at ZF1A had a nice showing last year during WWCW as a M/S remotely. We
decided to continue on again with a M/S this year but to do it onsite. We were
incredibly lucky to have N5KO join us. His years of experience at HC8N really
helped us in more ways than one.
The big project that we had this year was to convert a JK MidTri to a JK BigTri
and mount it at about 85ft on the big tower fixed at EU. The MidTri used to be
fixed to EU at about 35ft as part of a stack but after testing it was determined
that it didn't bring any value. Pete K8PGJ and Bill W9KKN did a bunch of prep
work on this antenna during our trip for WW SSB. Marty NN1C came down early and
had the antenna completely assembled before any of the other operators arrived.
The antenna went up on Wednesday morning and it is a winner. Based on testing
it is several db louder than any of the other antennas that we have to EU.
The main goal for this weekend was to break the '99 NA M/S record set in 8P. We
knew it would be difficult because in general the number of mults available are
down from that time. We knew at the half way point that we had an actual shot
at it so the whole team worked extra hard on Sunday to try to make it happen.
We were lucky that conditions were great on Sunday which allowed us to reach our
goal. We still have to survive log checking but we are hopeful that the score
will stand.
A huge thank you as always to Andrew ZF1EJ for hosting us and putting up with
our never ending station upgrades. Who knows what the next crazy project will
be but I have a feeling we will come up with something.
Oh, and one more thing: Marty and Bill both passed their Caymanian class A
license exams on this trip so look for some new ZF1 calls coming up in the very
near future!
