Comments:
This was the kind of conditions we have been waiting for since 2013! Not
perfect, but close enough. Only the western tip of Europe was open, but we can
hope for more next year.
I challenged myself to break my personal low power mixed record I set in the
1989 when the band was even more open. Here is a comparison:
1989 - Callsign WB6OWD QTH Orange CA The Berlin Wall fell 1 month prior.
Rig Kenwood TS-520S
Ant: Cushcraft 1/2 Wave Ringo Vertical on Roof.
Many countries worked all over Europe.
CW QSOs: 98 Phone: 378 Total 474 QSOs 139 mults Score 158,378
2022 - Callsign N6GP QTH Tustin CA T
Rig Kenwood TS-590SG
Ant: Wilson Tri-Bander 23 feet up, but rotor stuck NorthEast
40m inv vee in palm tree with tuner (for JA and west)
CW QSOs: 249 Phone: 293 Total 474 QSOs 129 mults Score 180858
So, basically I had to overcome a deficit in total QSOs and multipliers by
making more CW QSOs this time. I did it! But - I had a handicap of going to
the OCARC Radio club
dinner Friday night, and I think I missed some Sporadic E mults then. The band
seemed to die early each afternoon. The band really ran out of steam at 2200z
Sunday. My best QSO was with ZD7BG. Did not get the 3B8 and FR that others in
my area worked.
Lets hope for even more phenomenal condix next year!
73,
Tim N6GP
