Comments:
I joined to add my score to the one of my Club, the Italian Contest Club, but it
was an exercise in frustration
I'm not exactly an RTTY lover. I prefer the standard CW/SSB contesting, and I
find them way less tiring than an RTTY event. I didn't even bother to check
computer settings before the event because, in all honesty, I didn’t expect to
take part to this one. I had a hike scheduled with a few friends, but the
weather didn’t cooperate, so radio was a good alternative.
Chasing T22T was the priority, so I often poked into the FT8 subbands trying to
work them.
I didn’t have a complete set of antennas to play all band and I didn’t want
to suffer for too long ON-times on a band that is open also during the wee hours
(20m) nor to bore myself in a possibly empty band (10m) so I went for my
trustworthy 15m. I love this band, with all conditions and in all the times of
the year.
With a late start on Saturday, RTTY mayhem was everywhere. Working the first few
contacts proved to be extremely easy, notwithstanding my 5W, then things changed
abruptly.
Rates (not even sure I can call them like that) dropped and vanished. Scanning
the band up and down provided one or two contacts…sometimes. Lots of stations
kept CQing in my face and some others were just barely audible and trying to
work me exactly when big powerhouses covered them.
Sunday was even worse. Even less Q/h with tons of already worked stations
filling the band. Very few SA (I usually hear/work many more PYs and LUs). NA
always prove to be a great shot from here for me. They literally saved my
contest with plenty (for my standards) W7/W6s worked.
From time to time, I tried calling CQ with terrible results. Netted probably 4
QSOs at most. It was a 99.9% S&P event in which I literally consumed the
VFO.
Noticed a few very wide and dirty signals that “killed” the band on some
occasions. Some idiotic behavior on a rare multiplier in which someone started
bashing the operator, TXing nonsense idiocies on top of him, and making it
unworkable to all.
Overall I’m happy with my result, I couldn’t squeeze much more out of the
BIC time I put on. It was a struggle.
I don’t like RTTY :)
My head is already projected towards CQWW CW.
See you next contest.
