The failure may be due to the carbon-comp "equalizer" resistors changing
values. I would replace the whole string with larger C electrolytics,
glued down with silicone rubber adhesive, equalized with 100k, 3w,
Matsushita/Panasonic MOF resistors. Digikey is one source.
