A corollary applies to solid state PAs: the RF power transistor is the
fastest fuse known to mankind, and will blow to protect all the other
circuitry - no matter what alternative protection that circuitry has. It is
most likely to do this on the Saturday evening of a long weekend after the
store has closed, when an all time new country is on 20 metres with a good
signal and you have an easy shot at him, and you have no spares. Should the
transistor be unobtainable and no near replacements exist, the likelihood of
this event occurring is at least quadrupled.
