Didn't the output portion of tube final exciters act as a sort of "tuned
input" for the external amplifiers which lacked them? I though a lot of
the trouble came about from the "upgrade" to solid state final exciters?
cheers

Drake and Sigma used small caps to gnd from the filament pins of their
3-500 amps. Dont know if it did anything useful.
All my old GG 4-1000 amps used either direct cap input coupling or simple
pi nets right out of the Orr Handbook. Grid driven used a 200-400 Ohm
swamping resistor and a balun. Yes balun materials were available in
those ancient days! OT's will remember Arnold and others.
In the 1963-70 era drive was abundant and IMD was just starting to get
respect.
