Highly recommended - together with the surge limiting resistor ("glitch
resistor") in the HV supply, between point J and the shorting switch. 

To protect your valuable meters, invest in large diodes such as 1N5408
or GI750 - not weedy little 1N400x which may burn out in a surge.
