I just received a manual on the R.F. Communications (Harris) RF-110A =
amp.
that I am putting on the air. In the RF-124 power supply, I see =
something
that I have never seen before. Coming out of the full-wave diode bridge,
we first have a 2 Hy filter choke. Then, next in line is a .35 to 45 Hy =
swinging
choke, then a 25 mfd filter cap., and  a 50k ohm bleeder resistor. I =
have never
seen a swinging choke wired AFTER a filter choke in a P.S. circuit =
before, nor
have I seen such a high value filter cap in a choke input power supply. =
A note
in the manual says the swinging choke improves the power supply voltage
regulation over the current range. The RF-110A has to be the most =
over-engineered
piece of equipment I have ever seen! In talks with some former Harris =
engineers,
it was designed for 100% duty cycle all-mode operation; especially RTTY. =
The
Mil-Spec also required -60 db IMD. The RF-124 power supply weighs 200 =
pounds!
The RF-110A is a 1 KW no-tune, 2-30 Mhz amp with 26 db gain.
