Probably true. It is one of those that are in a gold metal rectangular
case. 100 ohms @ 25 watts.

 These sound like Dale resistors. They are designed to "pop-out" from the
ends when the power rating has been exceeded. If I remember them from the
military, they were wire wound with a composite center. They are better
suited for power supply and non-RF applications.
