It was stated that the worst thing in the world for some tubes is to put
them into storage for long periods.
I disagree! The worst thing is to pull a perfectly good tube out of your
amplifier for some maintenance that probably did not need to be done, lay it
on your desk and watch it roll off the desk onto the floor.
If you are lucky, you can move your foot over to break the fall as it
approaches the floor. That will prevent the envelope from breaking - but
not prevent the filament from dislodging.
