Barry,

The standard service main in a U.S. home is 240 volts AC delivered from
a center tapped transformer. The 240 Volts available across the hot leads
of the transformer is used to operate high power appliances like kitchen
ranges, clothes dryers, and air conditioners. The rest of the home
appliances run off 120 V which is taken from either one of the transformer
hot leads and the center tap connection. The center tap connection
(or neutral) is connected to earth ground at the home's service entrance.
Since the plugs for 120V and 240V are not interchangeable, there isn't much
chance of connecting a 120 V appliance to a 240 V outlet and vice versa.
