Carl,
Thank you for accurately analyzing my problem. A cracked solder connection
in the tank circuit (which was barely visible) turned out to be the problem.
You seem to grasp the situation with a minimum of information. The tubes are
all in good condition and the amplifier works well after redoing the joint.
Thanks to all who offered suggestions which lead to the correct analysis of
the problem.
