A technique used by the police radio people in Northern Ireland (and maybe
elsewhere) is to put a 2 inch diameter aluminium scaffold pole on top of the
tower. That gets the hits and gradually erodes away, but apparently since they
started doing that, they've had little trouble with losing antennas and
equipment.

Much easier here with less lightning. I have the antenna tuning shed at the base
of the tower, and the ground there is tied back to the tower grounding with 6
inch wide aluminium sheet ( flashing bought from Home Depot in Sacramento
actually!) The ground for the electricity supply to the house is a local ground
rod, and that's tied back to the tower grounding too. So far, no problem.
