The current through them was high enough to melt them.  When you get the 
switch you will see that one contact was turned into a little ball.

Melted first, then arced.

No, he forgot to switch antennas, and he was trying to load the wrong 
antenna directly with the amplifier.  It took him a while to realize 
what was going on!
