That is really interesting since the Icom tech I spoke to was adamant about a key line buffer. Even when I told him the AL-80B sources only +12vdc at 100mA he expressly said I needed one or could expect a failure. I understand those specs indicate I didn't need one at all. But then the Icom web site and the tech I spoke to said "Yes" I did.

Well I do agree it can't hurt....

Charlie, Thanks for the reply. Well I called Icom and they said for the newer ie Ameritron 811H types a relay is not needed to isolate since the relay already has a low enough keyer current. However, i asked on the 756 Yahoo group and here and was advised it really is a good idea to isolate the rig which the one i have does well and a lot cheaper .. I recalled icom and asked again after getting the feeling I really should isolate it and the Icom guy said no not needed at all BUT he agreed would not hurt a thing.. so I put on my belt AND suspenders <g>

ICOM support never answered my email but when I called them up they

know
that the ARB-704 is any better than the buffer you already have. The ICOM
tech did mention the ARB-704 as one that he knew worked with the 746 Pro.

To answer your question I don't think your missing anything. There are
several key line buffers out there..some expressly for the Icom line and
others like "Amp Keyer" and the ARB-704 claim to work with "virtually any
rig/amp combination"

-ps my ARB-704 is working fine...now I need the Somalia station!!

Trying to learn something here. i really do not understand the need to buy the 704 box. Please let me know what I am missing? As far as isolation I bought a $18.00 9I think) off Ebay. have the solid state relay built in to isolate my 756 Pro II from my Ameritron 811H .

The 704 looks great am I missing somethign do i need to upgrade to the
704?
Even though Icom support advised i needed nothing I checked with this
group
and was advised to isolate the radioa nd the device I am using works great
in doing that.
Thanks. If there really is a reason I may have to look at it thanks
Dan

I installed this key line buffer today and photographed it inside and
