I worked nearly two decades at Continental Electronics
in Dallas, Texas. In their earlier years, I suppose in the
very late sixties or so (prior to my tenure) , they had an
empty lot next to the main buildings. VOA wanted them
to do some testing on a curtain antenna and Continental
put one up per spec and ran the tests. It was pointed
toward Europe.

Of course during "off time" probably every ham in the place
took turns connecting his 50 or 100 watt rig to that
antenna (gain was something in the vicinity of 17 dB) and
worked whoever they wanted to. The antenna also allowed
them to hear better (in that direction) too. Folks simply
couldn't believe the power they were running. "Nah, come
on now, how many kW you REALLY running?" kind of
thing. And I missed out on it all!
