This appears to have been my problem. I finally got the AL-80A off  
the shelf and opened it up. I used a bit of freon-based solvent (yes,  
I still have some...) and followed up with an old white vellum QSL  
card dampened with a bit of LPS 3. A few strokes across the NC  
contacts left a smear of dark stuff on the card.
Works much better now on receive.
