Tracing the circuit - especially any bias circuits - should help 
identify FET from bipolar.

If the amp has a model number, you might be able to find marketing blurb 
which might say what device technology is used. Can you get a date 
estimate from the codes on any of the components - you can check how 
that ties in with when Motorola introduced their 1GHz FETs.
