Actually low level AM generated with something like an FT101 and amplified
with a linear amp can produce much better quality AM than most plate
modulated AM transmitters. 
It is much easier to get low distortion modulation at low levels than it is
at high levels. However the trade off is a lot of heat generated in the
linear.
