I wonder if the filament life of an ordinary incandescent light bulb relates
to that of an RF power tube. One can fairly easily see the vibration set up
in the light bulb filament at turn-on. I guess the vibration is caused by a
combination of AC voltage cycles and heating of the filament.

Interestingly, the old General Electric Company in the UK were always
looking to save money. To this end, a study was carried out by their
research group which showed that the reduction in life by switching lights
off and on was compensated by the saving in electricity if the 'OFF' period
exceeded 3 minutes.
