I take your point.  However, regardless of how sunny my outlook
happens to be on any given day, the fact remains that the economics
and sophistication of modern technology has surpassed the ability of
most folks to duplicate in a home setting.

Because of large scale integration (FPGAs, etc) it's never going to be
possible to tear into a handheld cellphone and repurpose it to Amateur
Radio in the same way we used to tear into public safety HTs and
mobiles, just to use one example.  There was a time when it was
possible with minimal tweaking to have the best gear available, and to
have the sense that *you* did it with your own hands.  Now, you can
buy incredibly sophisticated rigs, but most Hams would be at a loss to
do basic service on them.  To me, it just feels like we've lost
something.

Oh, and about the UK Gulag, don't worry about me telling them.  They
have the whole thing on camera. (lol)
