To answer all your questions requires a little history lesson.  The Alpha 
76 series was made at the time that the maximum input was a KW.  The 76 
series had an input circuit that required about 100 watts of drive to get 
about a KW input PEP.  After the limit was changed to 1500 watts output, 
Alpha offered a replacement input circuit (fewer resistors) which required 
about 75 watts drive to get about 1500 watts output.  The original plate 
metering was adequate for the KW limit but did not have enough range to 
cover an amp running at the new 1500 watt level.  The circuit doubler 
allows the meter to read off the pin at the higher output.  So, in short, 
it is not a defect that need to be corrected (and not just the symptoms) 
but is just an evolution of the limits of the amp that needs to be
