The best amplifier is the one that you purpose build for yourself from
the ground up...There are many pitfalls however for the inexperienced
builder...Selecting the right and comparable components for the job in
hand has to be the first consideration..Some of us have a "Nose" for
components at hamfests and various ham for sale sites on the net...
The idea is not to be too ambitious or you may be dissappointed with the
final outcome...Building a multi band amplifier DC to Daylight with no
experience is a challenge...Better to have in mind a practical project
to suit maybe two of your most used band, say 80-40 meters etc...
Set your goals right from the start and study circuit diagrams and
layout...Once you have an idea what you want to build make a rough
placement of the major components and measure an outline which will
accomodate everything with a bit of working space....Then you can go
ahead and select or preferably design and build your own case for the
project....None of this is difficult if you are prepared to take plenty
of time and put plenty of thought into your project..Always make sure
that you can access all components easily in your design...No good
burying a circuit board etc only to find later you have to pull the job
apart to get to it...
Front panels can be made to look quite proffessional if you take your
time...Etch primer over Aluminum and a few coats of good quality enamil
paint will give you an excellent surface to work on....I use Vinyl
strips for outlines and rub on lettering and dials etc....I spray the
finished job with quality clear enamel...Most of these panels turn out
very nice...
Of course if you don't feel that you can do any of this work then by all
means buy something commercial, however the feeling of satisfaction
won't be as good as using something you created with your own hands....
