Lane, Both the 3-400 and 3-500 have 2 different heights depending on the  
design.  The early models of both the 400 and 500 are shorter that the  later 
models.  The early models did not have a phenolic pin support  structure 
and the later models did.  The support structure design of both  models were 
higher than the early models.  But the 3-400 was always a bit  lower in 
height than the 3-500.  A couple of older type amps can only  accept the older 
version 3-400 as the newer design was too tall.  You  should be able to get 
the height off a spec sheet here on the Internet.   Try Google.
