Ford ran a positive ground until 1956 and some GM's to 55 plus some other
brands long gone. No corrosion build up on the battery terminals either.

As I said, it's an arbitrary engineering convention, most likely born from
the fact that electronic equipment from the earliest days (except 1950's
British sports cars!) ground the negative of the power supply.
