Although you've solved the problem I though I'd throw this out in case some one else might have this problem.

Try one of the thin rubber disks used to get a better grip when opening jars with the screw on tops.

The tube anode cooler is only about ¼” above the chimney. I cannot get
enough grip to rotate the tube.  Removing the chimney is almost out of the
question – lots of other stuff is in the way.

I’m thinking about making a tool that I clamp on the center anode post to
give me some leverage.

Any reason to not apply rotational force to the post??
