Sounds like oxidation of the normally-closed contacts of the T/R relay. Remove or slice open the plastic cover and use one of these:

Subject: [Amps] AL-1200 T/R problem

My AL-1200 has developed a T/R switching issue. In about 5 out of 10 transmissions the receive does not fully come back after releasing the PTT, A click of the mike button or a dot on the paddle brings the receive back.

Any suggestions where to strat lookiong to clear this problem?

Thanks and 73,
