Hi All,
Here's an update on my Viking KW problem. The problem was that the amplifier
tuned normally into a dummy load, but showed a 7:1 VSWR when connected to my
SteppIR, which has a nominally 1:1 VSWR at 7290 kHz. I was really mystified
by this problem. My spectrum analyzer showed no spurs or abnormal signals. I
swapped exciters (exchanged a Ranger 2 for the original Ranger) and still
had the problem. I verifed all the cables were fine.

The clue to the solution came when I was tuning the amp and got an RF burn.
The amp itself is grounded with a heavy braid. That suggested to me that
there really was 7:1 VSWR into the SteppIR, and in fact that turned out to
be true. The SteppIR has a bidirectional mode, which adjusts the four
elements to fire simulateously in both directionss. On 40m, however, three
of the elements are retracted and the driven element acts as a simple
half-wave dipole. SteppIR deactivates the bidirectional mode on 40 and
retracts all four elements, so that if the bidirectional button is
accidentally pressed, all elements are retracted. So that's happened. In
other words, it was operator error and I wasted all of our time. Sorry guys.

Jim W8ZR
