IIRC, the metal on those tubes is silver plated. Silver tarnishes . Typically 
silver sulfide (Ag2S - I have no idea where the sulfur comes from) and/or 
silver oxide (Ag2O), both of which are dark brown to black in color.  Means 
nothing, assuming that it is tarnish.
