A footnote to Gary's historical notes:

The Brown-led investigations were empirically confirmed using the best
techniques of the period with a 3 MHz pipe vertical in a field of radials.
Some of the techniques and results have been reopened for investigation
(Jack Belrose is among the investigators) to see if they stand up today.
It will be most interesting to see what emerges.

Second note: if anyone needs a modeling project, the development of
realistic trees, shrubs, and other clutter common to ham yards would be
useful in modeling ground or near-ground mounted verticals. The apparent
effects of RF-eating yard clutter have been anecdotally reported for
years, with roof-top mounted verticals receiving better operational
reviews than modeling suggests they ought to be receiving. It would be
good to be able to replicate varying degrees of clutter (with an
appropriate degree of confidence in the models) to see if models can
confirm the operational reports--which are quite variable.
