Phasing Beams and Baluns

This isn't obvious to me, but ...

When stacking beams (like two or three beams) and you're using the baluns
that came with the beams, does the "phase" of the baluns matter?  Does
"phase of the baluns" really have any meaning (if you aren't talking about
"current"-style baluns- or even if you are)?  

The subject came up with a friend started to phase two beams and the 
baluns weren't marked in any way.  An ohm meter basically showed no 
difference in resistance from the center conductor to a side bolt,
and the outer shield connector and the other bolt.  A call to the
antenna manufacturer (M-squared) yielded no insight on how to connect
the balun to the antenna to get proper phasing, but now I don't
think it matters...
