LTA Voice Blaster info??

Subject: LTA Voice Blaster info??

LTA has an ad in NCJ for their Voice Blaster... a voice keyer that uses your
sound card and works with CT/NA. Has anyone used this product? Does it work as
advertised? If it does what the ad says, then it seems to me that this is a
real cheap way to get a voice keyer!

If you have had exposure to this, what is the cableing like? I see that they
sell a seperate cable, but I'm wondering if it really is that complex that
average Joe Ham can't rig one up.

Any input or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks...

Hello everyone,

I and some of my friends are going to Saipan(KH0) for WWPH and WWCW, which
has already informed by Tack, JE1CKA. I just want to tell you more detail.

I am looking for a UK contest group that needs another operator for
their multi-multi team OR a club/private station that I can use.

Currently I find myself in the unfortunate position of living in a
studio flat in central Brighton with no place to erect even a simple
antenna for rag-chew QSOs. Now that the contest season is upon us I
am feeling a bit anxious - I need a contest fix.

Suggestions appreciated

Hello..
I am looking for a Club or contest station in Minneapolis, MINN .
I will be in Plymouth for a few weeks in November.
Maybe there is a chance to meet a VE to get the US lisence.
I hold the shortwave lisence in OE, and prefer CW operating.
Many thanks, 73

Excuses:
1. Saturday only operation - a major home improvement project
prempted the planned full time operation.
2. A new power line noise source broke loose Friday afternoon
    with S7 on 15 & 20m and S9+ on 40/80. This made the 11 hr
operation feel like 24. Required advanced ESP processing
to pull out call signs on 80meters.
3. Tree's logging software arrived Wednesday. Unfortunately,
not enough time to get it running. Yet another contest
that was hand logged (I keep saying I'll never do another
    one without computer logging).

Result: Not as fun as last year, but that's the way it goes.
Enjoyed working you and thanks for the patience when
I requested multiple repeats of the exchange!

For CQP, I lugged my Alpha 87A up to a dusty mountain top and tried powering
it with a 4500 watt generator. I knew that was a bit on the weak side, but
figured I could get a KW or so out of it. Wrong! The Alpha shut down
instantly whenever I applied drive to it. I thought that I simply needed a
larger generator. Last night N6TV told me that N6BT tried to use his 87A in
CQP with a 6500 watt water-cooled Honda generator and had the same problem.
Has anybody on the reflector had experience with this? I'm curious if a line
conditioner of some kind might hold the voltage up enough to enable the Alpha
to be used off a generator.

Since my experience of networking two pc's running CT
during past contest is, well, mixed .. I'm looking for
a bit of advice.

How do you test to make sure everything works before the
contest? Is it nesscary to setup your station as you would
have it for the contest?
(Previously, I have had the problem of QSO's not arriving at
the multiplier computer - which I'm assuming is down to a
particular combination of antenna etc.)

Is CT v8 with the COMTSR program, better than older versions?

Only 18 days to the WW !!

Yes, you need to set things up as you would during the contest. It is THE
ONLY WAY to make sure that all your cabling (including having enough 9-25
pin adapters) and software configurations on the various computers is
correct.

If you are making network cables, use the handshaking lines (pins 4, 5, 6
and 20 of a 25-pin connector) as well as the data lines (pins 2, 3 and 7)
since CT can use these lines to reduce data collisions. Also make sure the
network cables are well shielded, so they do not pick up any stray RFI which
can cause computer glitches.

Assuming you have the software set up correctly, the simplest way to test
the network is to send ALT-G ("gab") messages from the various computers.
Any ALT-G sent from one computer should show up in a window on all the other
other computers. Make sure that each station computer has a unique station
number. If you can ALT-G from each computer, and the messages show up on
every other computer, then you're probably OK.

A second way is to send SH/DX commands from the packet window of each
computer, making sure that all terminals are getting DX spots in the ALT-A
window.

Finally, log a few test QSOs, and make sure that all computers log those
QSOs.

>Is CT v8 with the COMTSR program, better than older versions?

It's only better in the sense that if you are using version 7, you MUST
configure your IRQs the same way as the CT manual says, i.e.

        COM1 IRQ4
        COM2 IRQ3
        COM3 IRQ2
        COM4 IRQ5

If you are using version 8, then you can have them use any non-conflicting
IRQs that you want, because the TSR takes care of this mapping.

I am in 100% concurrence with AD1C's suggestions on CT networking.

A few more suggestions:

1) Get some ferrite rods and wrap the RS-232 cables around them as close
to the computer as you can.

2) Run the inter-computer ports at a slow speed (i.e. 300 or 1200 baud).
Forget 9600 baud - it's too easy for a burst of RF (or other junk) to
    wipe out the entire packet.

3) Before the day of the contest, make sure that the computer owner is
100% sure of which serial port is which (i.e. COM1 vs. COM2).

4) Make sure there is a null modem between the computers.
