If I can interrupt the flow for a moment ...

Following up on my note of a few weeks ago, I operated for a few hours in
the Phone SS using the DVP, voiced callsigns and serial numbers, to see
about acceptance/ legibility/etc. Even though my small, low-power station
isn't really fitted for it, I tried to run as much as possible to simulate
the sort of usage that a big gun might give it.

Conclusions, for what they're worth.

1. People didn't have much difficulty picking out their own call-sign, even
if it was voiced in phonetics different than those they normally use, or in
verifying that I had copied it correctly. I found it a little "jarring",
though, to have the machine use only one set of phonetics, because I hadn't
realized how much I tend myself to adopt the other person's phonetics during
a contest QSO.

2. The "voiced" serial numbers didn't seem particularly hard for people to
copy, either. My "repeat" rate wasn't materially different from what I am
used to on phone.

3. Only one station (VE4GV, a denizen of this reflector) commented on the
fact that I was using the DVP, although I'm sure many noticed.

As long as this reflector is serving as a channel to K1EA (I hope), the one
thing on my DVP wish list would be revision of the TSR and/or CT to provide
a capability to record "last letters" (and numbers) separately from
"ordinary letters." If I had that capability, I would feel no need to
record all the 2-letter and 2-number combinations (which takes lots of disk
space), because you can achieve pretty natural speech sound by making all
but the last letter or number level pitch, and making the "lasts" falling
pitch and with a bit more emphasis.

For what it's worth.

The problem with the longer call is that it is more information
that must be correctly exchanged and logged for a valid contest
qso. In CQWW for example, the call is essentially the only
information that must be copied correctly, since the report is
fixed and the zone can usually be correctly derived from the
call. With my 6-character call, I have 50% more information to
exchange with each qso than someone with a 1x2 call.

I had the opportunity to select a call in the 70s but didn't
because I was inactive at the time, and I've been kicking myself
ever since I started getting back into it 7 or 8 years ago. I'll
be one of the first in line for a new short call. Let's see, I
wonder how W2ED sounds on cw ...

Message-ID: <2D15F3D6@ms.hq.nasa.gov>

I **may** be about to change my geography sufficiently to be able, for the
first time, to contemplate a modest tower (70 feet or so) and some
"pointable" antennas. I know this may seem incredibly elementary to many of
you, but I can really use some advice.

Money is an issue, and a significant one. I am thinking along the
following lines:

Tower: Rohn 25, with two sets of guys, the top-most set Phillystran down to
the first point where the remaining wire is non-resonant on 10-40 meters

Rotator: T2X or ?

10-20 meters: TH-6 or TH-7 (comments? alternatives?)

40 meters: Cushcraft "shorty-forty", mounted about 10 feet above the
tribander (or does mounting the 40 on top either not make enough of a
difference or raise hardware problems I haven't anticipated?)

80-160: shunt feed for the tower on transmit, with a loop and/or beverages
on receive.

Any comments, critiques gratefully received direct to e-mail address below
(to save bandwidth). Location will be mid-Atlantic states, most likely not
a mountain top, so icing and frequent severe winds are not a problem, but
gusts to 80 MPH can and do occur.

Thanks all and happy holidays,

What I've done in my search for my perferred calls is to create a CT
file and just move the cursor between the calls. Then I can
concentrate on hearing them and worry how easy they are to send later.
Remember, if ya can't copy 'em ya can't work 'em.

Looking up calls in callbook can be rather tedious. Another option
is to query the local packet cluster using "sh/ham" if it's installed
on your system. I found this to be quite entertaining, especially
during those slow hours of the SS CW contest. Of course, the real way
to do it is to generate a list from CD-ROM.

Any interest in maintaining a database (notice I didn't say the "L"
word!) of calls which are currently assigned and MAY be available?
These wouldn't be listed in the FCC's database.

Case in point. K6NA received his call during the first "lottery" by
knowing that the old holder of K6NA was going to request a new call.

Another interesting case involves N6NR/7 and N7NR/6. I think you can
see how they'd be interested in working out a "deal". Whether or not
they'd tell anyone else about it is another story.

Personally I'm going QSY to W4 land soon so I'm interested in that end
of the world. (Yes, I know W4VV is available but what a horrible CW
    identity!)

(Yes, I know W4VV is available but what a horrible CW
    identity!)

All this talk of calls becoming available after the "vanity" call
process begins is premature. If the FCC doesn't hold calls in a
dead-letter-box for a fair length of time, there will be utter chaos!
Can you imagine the confusion at the QSL bureaus?

I think we'll probably find that a call will have to be vacant for
something like five years before it is available. So rewrite those
call selection programs!!!

RE K9VV postings
A:...I hope you did enter SS as a single op assisted entry, right?

B:...did your third op, the BO0, used to be XE2 Dos Equis (XX) or was it
XE2 Jose Cuervo???

C:...another guy looking for a four call...point of interest-whilst W4VV
aint your cup of tea, W4 B VV did rather well with that call on code...it
is the w4 BRAVO victor victor that first comes to mind, yes,
but some excellent Multi-Multis were done on code with that call which
not only is that same "lousy" cw call you mentioned-but has a B in the
  middle of it, too!

Random remarks:

* My 1956 call of WN1NJL was also CW poetry, and got the
maximum power out from my 6L6G final amplifier.

* W1NJL, on AM, when spoken quickly in SS, always
     elicited a comeback to W1HIL.

* I do not know why, but when working Japan (and only
Japan), I _must_ say K1 Victoria Radio, as K1 Victor
Radio inevitably seems to come back to me as K1 Echo
     Radio.

* KH6GPQ liked those long dashes so much that when he
moved off of Maui (he worked on top of Mount Haleakala
as a controls systems engineer), he selected K1GQ. As
he has never entered a phone contest to my knowledge,
     GQ has served him well.

* If you think there are other guys in the pileup with
something like your call, try being in a pileup with
     K1AR, W4DR, N1IR, K1IR, W1JR, K3LR, K8MR, W1RR, K2TR,
     KB2R, K1TR, K8UR, K2WR, N4XR and N4ZR.

Fred, K3ZO was not only a member of W9YT, he was one of the original founders

the station who came back to W9YT's very first CQ!

Subject: ICOM 751
Message-ID: <191@gs>

I recently did a very informal "survey" of ICOM 751 users on the
DXPacketCluster here on the east coast. (Home node = W1RM in Conn.)
Here is what I cam up with:

First, thanks to all those that responded to my query regarding the ICOM
IC-751(A) radios. A couple of guys asked for a "summary" of the replies
that I got. Thus this short story was born. OK, so it's not short! HI

I had an opportunity to purchase an IC-751 at a reasonable price,
but once I found out it was a plain 751 (non "A") I changed my mind.
Read on to see why...

I got about 10 or so reply's to my HELP msg. re: the 751 and all of them
were positive. Such comments as "had mine 10 years with no problems" and
"love the radio" and other comments that made me feel good about this radio.

Along with these were some comments like: "be aware of" and "watch out for,
the operating system memory" and "know that this will cost some $$ if it
goes". I had heard about this before, but for those not up on this > It seems
that the early ICOM 751's had their operating memory in RAM. That is, the
radio would go completely dumb if the (lithium?) battery were to go dead on
you. This is a different issue than just the memories, were talking about the
entire radio here! (ie: What am I?, What do I do?, How do I do it?, etc.).
If the RAM goes (due to battery failure), so goes the radio.

I called ICOM and got this story. He said; "There is a plug-in RAM CARD in the
rig (case-bottom) with the operating system and battery on it. We expect the
battery to last 20 years or more. If the radio should ever go dumb, just
unplug the card, send it in, and we'll replace the battery and reload the RAM
for $35". I asked has this price gone up much over the years? He said; "Well,
10 years ago it was $25". He said the competition gave ICOM a lot of greif over
this "ICOM time bomb" but that it was an honest attempt by ICOM to give you 32
memory channels, etc. with the existing technology of the time".  I asked;
Would I want to send in the board just for a RAM upgrade? He said; "Thats one
feature they never took advantage of", (ie: they never upgraded the operating
system). So, all in all, this did not seem to be a big deal, to me. We then
got into the differences between the 751 and the 751A. First let me say
that some of you guys mentioned things like "the 751A felt smoother
(tuning) than the 751" and "the 751A has a rubber cover on the VFO knob"
"the 751A has a keyer and the 751 did not" and "the 751A has a CW filter in
it", etc.

The ICOM person said that the 751 had "a lot of pesky little bugs" and that
the 751A fixed all of them. I could not get him to elaborate on this. He
said that one owner of a 751 might not even notice some of these things but
that you might (upon buying one). He said the 751A has "lots of improvements"
and is "highly enhanced" as compared to the 751. He said that he would not
even buy a 751, but that if I were to, that it should cost a lot less than a
751A. He said the 751's were in production for "about a year and a half" and
the model line has been in production for 10 years. "It just went out of
production". So the 751A is a good rig. I would not feel good about selling
my YAESU FT-757 GX to get a plain 751 though. My preference, based on what I
was told. There you have it, a summary of both the good and the bad that I
heard about the 751 and 751A. Again, all of the owners, (past and present)
that I heard from, loved thier ICOM 751 / 751A! No-one said anything
negative, (aside from the memory cautions and above comments on the plain 751).

Thats it; 73, de Glenn
