I have been testing a copy of NA to see if I can get it to work
with my existing station setup. I have been having the following
problem with the CW interface, and would appreciate any suggestions.
My HF rig is an Icom 761. I have hooked up the standard CW keying
interface via the parallel port, and it seems to work just fine.
I can use NA to send the exchanges, and use the keyboard in "keyer"
mode without any problems.
The IC 761 has one key jack (unlike the 765). The key jack is a
1/4 inch plug that can accept a squeeze key directly for iambic
keying. Tip, ring, and sleeve (ground) are used for dot, dash, and
common, respectively. To use a straight key or external keyer, it
is necessary to use a stereo plug, but only use the tip and sleeve
(ground), leaving the ring unconnected.
The challenge is that I want to have use of the paddle and the keyboard
simultaneously during a contest. I want to be able to switch to the
paddle quickly to send something not stored in a function key, etc.
On the IC-761, the paddle is only effective when the "ELEC-KEY"
switch in IN; the external keying line (from NA) only works right when
the "ELEC-KEY" switch is OUT. This is the only way to make it work
with the paddle and keyer wired in parallel (as far as I can tell).
The problem is that I must constantly toggle the ELEC-KEY switch to
switch between the paddles and NA. Imagine trying to do this under
contest conditions, and you'll see what I am getting at. It is not
acceptable, and makes for lots of errors.
I then learned that NA had an iambic keyer built right into the program.
I thought that this would be the solution. I wired up the paddles to
the parallel port according to the instructions, and it did not work.
The rig would randomly go into long strings of iambic dah-dit-dah-dits...
for many seconds, stop intermittently, then continue on with more random
iambic strings. Bottom line here is that the keyer does not seem to
work correctly. Note that keyer and key line are both on the parallel
port in this configuration, as serial ports are used up for rig control
and PacketCluster. Different pins are used for the keyer and key line.
The big question -- has anybody successfully hooked up the IC 761 to
NA and paddles simultaneously? Any suggestions would be gratefully
appreciated. I will post the solution if/when I find it. Thanks.

I guess Dxpeditions are very different than contests. But in contests I came up
with a cure for the stations who dont Id. I DUPE them if I dont recognize their
voice/style, and ask them for their call. During contests this is the only way.
I never used to do this until I heard a world class DX operator saying he
doesnt ID frequently because it hurts his rate and after all he has to look
after himself.
I used to sit and wait for many Q's and try hard to refrain from saying
"call?". But now I wait for 2 qsos and if he doesnt ID tough luck for him. He
is affecting my rate! And as far as I can tell, my rate is as important as his!
So if a globe trotting contester finds me in his log more than once, its more
than likely his fault not mine.

The last time I looked, CT286 at 8.52 had a problem with re-setting the system
clocks
incorrectly. Ken, K1EA, said it was because it was compiled with a buggy
compilier and that had caused the problem. I checked back as late as last
Friday and the bad CT286 was still there. CT 386 and CT86 seem to be OK.

Does anyone have experience using the new DX engineering 6 element 20m on a
60' boom? Supposedly, this is a new "higher gain" version compared to the
56' boom predecesser. Mark, K0KX, currently owns the 20DX-6 w/ 56' boom and
is wondering if adding the 4' boom and adjusting spacings and lengths is
worth the effort. Personally, I can't believe adding 4' of boom would make
much difference. More significant is that DXE changed all element lengths
and boom spacings. Perhaps the old one was not tuned properly and the added
boom allowed them to achieve their original design goals?
I don't know, but we would like some info from the field.

For the sprint, instead of using an asterisk to indirectly denote who

asterisk would be far better used to show a 100 W entry. It seems
that if someone sent in an electronic entry, they pretty much know

I read that Rick Niswander planned to denote low power next year.

I don't mind discussion of logging programs on cq-contest. It happens
all the time. In fact, some of them are interesting, such as what does
CT do that N6TR doesn't do, vice versa, etc. But I don't really give a
damn about whether the CT BBS is up, or down, or whether the latest
version of CT has bugs. This stuff should be persued in a mailing list
dedicated to CT, and there is such a thing now. One of the reasons
you *don't* hear about the N6TR bugs-du-jour is that Tree runs his own
mailing list dedicated to his special interest group.
Furthermore, you should have directed this last message to me rather
than to the entire list, since you were posing a question to me personally.

I finally got the IF10B interface installed and built the level
translater that was in QST Feb 93. All seems to work except when
a command is sent to the 940, say from CT to change bands, the
940 sends an obnoxious "4R" in cw in the monitor. Anybody else
have that experience? Anyway of fixing it short of turning down
the Buzzer volume?
