If you don't have access to a Chinese finger trap-type device, then
the best knot is a "pipe hitch" with added cinching loops. This
distributes the load over a length of cable, doesn't pinch, and
won't yank the connectors off the end of the cable. Ask a Boy
Scout how to tie one - no kidding.

Hi all. I was wandering various FTP sites at lunch-time today and hooked
on to the site in JA where PED is to be found. Lo and behold I came across
a voice version - vped....
Well I may have missed discussion about this as I have been on holiday
recently and SET NOMAIL - if so and everyone knows about it then...sorry!
However, while SSB holds no interest to me being 99.99% CW, if anyone wants
to take a look at this voice PED version and doesn't know about it then

and download it.
If this thread hasn't been hacked to death on the refelctor, anyone tried

The AL-82 was reviewed in QST - July 92 - a comparative review, also
including the Commander HF-1250, KW TL-922A and the TT Centurion. Here is
an exerpt from the Al-82. (Thanks to Mike Tracy - KC1SX - ARRL Technical
Information Services (TIS)).
"Blower speed can be reduced if noise is a problem. Four settings are
available. According to the instructions, the lowest speed develops
sufficient airflow for standard SSB and CW operation, but the highest speed
should be used for contest and RTTY operation. The blower is on the noisy
side at the higher speed setting, but we prefer to run as much air as

The Fifth Running of the Internet Sprint Contest was held 2 weeks ago.
The turnout was very impressive with record levels of activity. This
presented some new challenges in generating the name tracings to which
John has risen to. He has expanded the capibilities of his checking
software at the expense of sleeping this week to present a report which
I have only begun to absorb after reading it twice.
(Hey John, did you ever get your taxes done??).
Conditions seemed to be better for most of you than the previous running.
About half of the top ten scores came from the east coast. Once again,
the station that was ahead after one lap didn't win the contest. Jeff,
KR0Y came out and hot lapped with the fastest car, but didn't keep the
pedel to the metal in the second lap.
SprINT first timer, Ralph Bowen, N5RZ, came in second and showed that the
highest accuracy score doesn't have to come from way down the list...
Oh, well if you go all the way down the list, you will find N0BSH with
100 percent accuracy... for his single QSO.
The next running of this contest will probably be the second or third
weekend in October or New Year's day, or both. Your input is solicited
in selecting the next date.
In the spirit of making calculators which are physically smaller than
their manual, here is the contest report which takes more time to read
than the contest took in the first place.

The SprINT LOGCFG I posted talked about the workaround. But I admit it is a
lot to read. . . . Going forward, new versions of LOG make it easier to
work dupes in S&P. And other very recent improvements make it much easier
to use in the SprINT. You'll even be able to practice with the simulator
the same way you'll use LOG for real. I'll post a new LOGCFG before the
next SprINT.
*** N6TR comes to his defense. The new INTERNET SPRINT contest is intended
to finally make the program easy to use. I had thought keeping it a
challenge would be more interesting... guess it was too hard. With the
new contest, there are no longer any weird commands you need to remember.
Also, I programmed all the CW memories the way I use them so you can
use that as a starting point.

Your log had about 10 QSOs missing from the end. Dave/K5GN had a whole
bunch of Qs missing from the middle. As such, no Qs were busted if they
claimed to have worked you but were not in your logs.

In Bill's case, the thread was traceable through NV6O and KP4TK to KR2J,
even though KP4TK was sending ERIC to everybody. But KR2J didn't realize
he hadn't completed the Q with N7LOX, so ERIC died there. Lesson to Eric:
Don't mess with Bill!

K2MM thought he got JOHN with #83 from K2TW. In that QSO, K2MM passed RICH
with his #53 to K2TW. But K2TW did not complete the QSO; maybe he was
working someone else, or maybe K2MM was too weak to make it through the
static. For whatever reason, the name RICH fell on the floor:

If you compare the names received from Jeff with the names sent to him in
the previous Q, you'll see he did remarkably well for using just a manual

In the SprINT's second running (Oct '93), Matt/AA7BG handed out eight MATTs,
and Linda/AA5NN gave out five LINDAs. Tree commented on how these two ops
really changed the flavor of the contest:

READER'S GUIDE TO SPRINT NAME TRACES

WA1MUG started with the name John. The first station he worked got the name
OK, then passed it to W1UA. The name John showed up OK in all three logs.
W1UA then worked KZ4H who recorded Jon in his log. Either W1UA missent the
name or KZ4H miscopied or mislogged the name on his QSO #7. KZ4H then
passed Jon along to the next station he worked with his QSO #8.
Jon survived until W6GO copied it on his last QSO. It showed up in the logs
of all stations in between, except for one station who did not send one in.

WB2OEU started with Fred which showed up OK in WB2RKK's log. RKK then
worked WB2WOI who did not send in a log. But WOI's next QSO# was found in
WA2UWA's log, and UWA recorded Stinky. The error may have occurred anywhere
between RKK sending and UWA receiving.
UWA then passed Stinky with his QSO #17, and Stinky eventually made it into
WA2EAH's enormous log. EAH then worked WA2CCF, who did not send in a log,
and the trace was lost. Along the way, the name passed through at least two
consecutive stations who did not send in logs. This made manual suturing of
the traces necessary.

K2KIR started with Howie. WA2SPL said he copied and sent Howie, but W2MTA
said he copied Sowie. MTA's log also said he found Sowie offensive, so he
changed it to Bill before sending it with his QSO #20. W2FR copied Bill OK,
but his log said he's always had trouble sending Bill, so he changed it to
Dill before passing it on with his #30.

K1ZND worked someone on his QSO #11 who sent him Dave -- or so he thought.
The other station didn't think the QSO complete, and so continued by sending
Dave on his next QSO without putting ZND in his log. Meanwhile, ZND
blissfully passed on the freshly cloned Dave with his #12.
Dave made it OK to WA1HCO who passed it to WA1IQJ. But IQJ was cluelessly
sending Don to everybody, including the next station he worked, WA1PID.
This Don survived until he got to WB2FZO. FZO thought he passed Don to
K2EIU/5, but EIU was really working someone else, and Don fell on the floor.
