When someone who is not in the contest is brave enough to call and
ask "What's this all about?" what I do is:
a) lead them through the exchange...
"Since you live in Seattle, your section is Western Washington"
b) recap the exchange at the end of the interview:
"So your exchange is Number 1 A KA7XYZ WWA 92"
c) follow up with profuse thanks for the QSO and an invitation to
"Jump in and hand out a few contacts, we need and appreciate
the extra participation. The more, the merrier."
Is this a "manufactured" contact? Maybe, but I don't feel guilty.
Rate ain't everything. Then again, you won't find any hardwood
on the walls in my shack, but if I have to be rude in order to
win I'll settle for not winning.

Well, the guy in front of me didn't stop for the stop sign, so why should
I? And I was running five minutes late this morning getting to work so I
grabbed the radar detector as I ran out the door this morning (they're
illegal here in Virginia, you know), and I don't think I ever got below
65 all the way to work! Traffic really cooperated for once..nice, big
gaps between all the cars so it was NO PROBLEM slipping around everybody!
And the only three red lights I ran into had JUST turned red, so it was
no problem getting through those, either...In fact, I even got to work
five minutes EARLIER than had I left on time! Boy, What A Rush!
But, I have a confession to make...even though everybody else was using
FM last weekend in the VHF contest, all I did was go listen for 15
minutes once during a real slow period...
The way to treat the guys who think it's OK to do things that are not
strictly within the spirit of the contest is to simply ostrasize them.
And if that doesn't work, then the contest obviously is no longer worthy
of your participation. There are other ham activities less stressing and
frustrating than beating heads against the lane-changers, light runners
and speeders...

I just talked to Ray, WF1B, who says that networking is not supported with
the RTTY software at this time. He says the programming job would be very
big and only a very few of us have asked for it. He receives many more
requests to write routines to support more contests. If any of you
need/want a networked version, let Ray know. He is on CompuServe at
73750,2177 and is a subscriber to this reflector. If enough of us are
interested, he may get motivated to do the work. Judging from the
responses I received almost immediately to my inquiry, there are a number of
you who would be interested in this program.
