Ever try to do one of these things while your daughter is asking you
how to use the Sony Videocam? Nice excuse, huh?

A lot of activity on 40, a little on 80. I started out ok, but as usual
things settled out to my normal rate. Several 2 and 3 minute brain
fades.

113 q's, 31 of which were on 80. Went back and forth from 40 to 80 etc
several times. Felt like big time contester with two radios- HAH.

I also vote for K4PQL as big sig on 40. What a great job. WA2SRQ
follows in strength - we must have had a pipeline.

Tried to keep up with N4TQO and AB6FO but failed in the end.

Glad to see that some of you fellow SprINTer's had the extra time to
call N4BO. I guess if I had time to do home videos..............

Were there any other variations of God and Mohamed?

Did Zap refer to the log checking program or to the fb Gladiator?

CU all in NA and Sprint

...whoa, once again the cq-contest crowd acts as a super support group. The
10-4 CD dimension request aide offers were close 20...one of the two 10-4's
was built on Sunday by W1CW whilst WC4E and K1ZX installed a TIC ringrotor
for the soon to go up 15 meter mega monster 426-Hemi yagi. To those who
questioned why I needed to worry about ten at this time of the cycle......
well.....you gotta make Qs on ten and when your 10 meter antenna is also
your 15 antenna you have a "conflict of interest" at a multi-single!

...to anyone who has not put up one of the TICs it is very complicated, I
recommend two guys on the tower as mandatory, cannot see any way one person
could do it...and allow a coupla hours, there are a lot of bolts, "it ain't
your father's tailtwister!" ....the ringrotor is in place and turning, it is
VY quiet, I'm suspicious-it can turn a bigger antenna than the conventional
rotors yet it is quieter...seems like a manly rotor should be louder...but
then again I guess that is not politically correct.

KM9P - I AM ABOUT TO GO DOWN HAIRPIN ALLEY FOR OUR 15 METER YAGI, TOO -
LEMME KNOW WHAT YOU FIND OUT! HEAH-HOW MUCH DID YOU SHORTEN THE DRIVEN
ELEMENT? WAS IT A PERCENTAGE, WHAT???? SEEMS LIKE ALL THE BOOKS SIMPLY
SAY IT IS NECESSARY TO SHORTEN IT, BUT DON'T SAY BY HOW MUCH! WHAT ARE YOUR
SPACINGS/LENGTHS...WHAT KINDA BALUN YOU USING, ETC.

....again thanks guys for all the help, see y'all in the NAQP - GL

While not strictly applicable to this forum I thought there might be some
useful experience out there that may pass me the benefit of their wisdom!

I will be going to Europe at the beginning of May and will probably take a
week somewhere warm! Current plans indicate Cyprus, or the Canary Islands.
Can anyone give me information re operation from these two locations - lead
times for documentation, local contacts and any other input you feel is valid.
While I am an experienced traveller this will be my first 'DX Expedition' so
I will appreciate all feedback!

Happy New Year to All!!!

Hi Bob,

Not sure who this was adressed to, But I received it in my psuedo
box - pasmith.

The Black Hole Contesting Conspiracy is rising again for the NAQPs.
The first team - BLIZZARD has ND1H, VE4GV, KE0A on it so far. Am
trying for WB0O and VE4VV to round out the roster and maintain regional
team integrity.
The second team - ALBERTA CLIPPER has some neophyte contestors.
Listen for N0ZAT, and KB0OXN and maybe a few others.

Hey yefellow contesters! There is life before NAQP and Sprint!
I made 235 Qso's (mind wanders when red once in a while...hihi)
Liked the name exchange idea and three dupQ qso supedupe
o dupe rule...
MyStarted the contest with my XYL's name (Bonnie) ...What happened to you?
If someone has found here name please return (hihihi)
K4PQL gets the award from here as the loudest stn! Wow my ears ...
EK6LL must of been QRP soor something? SDave is that really REALLY
your signal?
Runner up for electronic musluscle man is W7ZRC...
80m was el stinko! S3-4 mnoise level...must be all those coews eating grass?
hi
First thirty minutes were great ! 20 QSO's then hit the skids...
live and leanrn I guess...Hay Hey this stuff is fun! When;s 's the next
one"

Catch ya on the NAQP & Sprints...Remember it's IL as in Illinois...CUL

Bill:
I am not Tom Schiller or Dean Straw, and I am sure you have already been
through this, but I did just jot down the calculations for an ideal
hairpin (a series RC in parallel with an inductance) and came up with
the following.

If R is the radiation resistance, Xc the capacitive reactance, and Xl
the inductive reactance of the hairpin, the driving point impedance is
real if
                Xl = (Xc^2+R^2)/Xc              (1)

and the resultant real input impedance Ro is

                Ro = (Xc^2+R^2)/R               (2)

Plugging in R-jXc = 15.3-j19.6 yields Ro = 40.4 ohms for an SWR of 1.24.
Normally, one would then further shorten the driven element to increase
the capacitive reactance and therefore the ratio Ro/R, since R is
expected to change much more slowly than Xc. Rearranging (2) to find the
value of Xc needed to obtain Ro = 50:

                Xc = sqr[R(Ro-R)]               (3)

yields Xc = 21.3 ohms. This indicates that Beezley and N0XX are right
-you should be able to match it (by further shortening of the DE) and
that the "other guys" are also right-if Xc is below 20 ohms, you can't
match it.

My guess is that your impedance is not quite what YO says, and there is
an imbalance in your system which causes the simple LCR model to be
inaccurate and therefore insufficient.

Have you included a balun, and--if so--what kind, and how is it mounted
and attached? Baluns are not transparent, after all.

Accurate measurements are worth much more than simple assumptions.
Perhaps you should reconsider that noise bridge and receiver, or can
borrow an Autek bridge or the MFJ combo bridge to see what you really
have up there.

Please let us know what you discover.
