I hate when manufactures discountinue stuff like that. Especially something
that is such a sought after item. You would think that demand would cause
them to re-consider.
I was one of the fortunate ones that got soaked $75 for a tiny little board
with few parts on it a couple of years ago. And I remember I had to wait a
few months back then. The manual came with a schematic which I would be
happy to copy and mail to any "engineering type build-it ham" that is
considering duping this module.
Incidentally, the only difference on the schematic between the IF-10B and the
IF-10A is 1 resister. I don't know the difference physically as I've never
seen an IF-10A. But perhaps the A could be modified to be a B?
Ironically, even though Kenwood dropped the ball on this one. I've written
software to interface for all the major brand rigs and have found that
Kenwood is the easiest to program.

An interesting and cautionary tale for all of us thinking about separate
receive antennas!
I note that ICE has something they call an RF Limiter/Receiver Protector
in their catalogue for $36, or $58 with their lightning protection built
in. They claim to limit input RF signal to .3V RMS. They go on to say
that "the circuit uses a multi-stage design of transformer saturation
coupling and incandescent current limiters" (nice name for penlight bulb(s).
Elsdewhere in their literature, ICE also says that you have to protect
beverages against lightning, because they have measured induced voltages
in the thousands of volts from cloud-to-cloud lightning above their 800
foot beverage, and hundreds of volts just from precip.
All sounds persuasive to me, but what do the gurus say? And anyone had
any experience with the ICE protector and/or their beverage matching
units or preamplifiers? I would wonder particularly about dynamic range
(for contest purposes).
Your choice - respond on the reflector or direct, in which case I'll
summarize.

The easy way to prevent excessive RF from getting into a receiver
is to use one or two reed relays that are keyed along with the
radio. Reed relays will operate in less then a millisecond and
there will be essentially no loss in the received signal. With
a SPDT relay the rcvr input can be switched from the beverage
to ground on transmit.

1. Send a message to CT-USER-REQUEST@eng.pko.dec.com to request the file(s)
you want, i.e.:
GET cty.dat
GET history.cty
Remember that file names are in lower case. Multiple file requests on
separate lines are OK. The files are there NOW.
2. Send a message to CT-REQUEST@eng.pko.dec.com and get the whole .ZIP file
in UUencoded form. If you don't already have a program to UUdecode, you
will need to get UUD.COM as well:
GET cty.zip
GET uud.com (optional)
Remove the headers and trailers from the UUD.COM mail message so that
the resulting file begins with "ENC.COM.B&F=" and ends with "z!1", and
save it to UUD.COM. Then remove the headers and trailers from the
CTY.ZIP mail message so that the resulting file begins with "begin 664
cty.zip" and ends with "end". Save this to a file called CTY.UU. Then
on your PC type:
C:\> uud cty.uu
This should create the CTY.ZIP file.
3. FTP the file from:
maspar.maspar.com:/pub/k2mm/ct-files/cty.zip
This is an ANONYMOUS FTP server. When you get the username
prompt from gatekeeper, log in as anonymous, and use your EMAIL
address (i.e. reisert@eng.pko.dec.com) as the password. Then
'cd' to /pub/k2mm/ct-files and 'get cty.zip'.
John K2MM is pretty good about keeping the latest files in there. Look
for a file dated February 10, 1995 or later.
4. FTP the file from:
gatekeeper.dec.com:/pub/misc/hamradio/cty.zip
This is an ANONYMOUS FTP server. When you get the username
prompt from gatekeeper, log in as anonymous, and use your EMAIL
address (i.e. reisert@eng.pko.dec.com) as the password. Then
'cd' to /pub/misc/hamradio and 'get cty.zip'.
This may take several days to catch up - look for a file dated
February 10, 1995 or later.
5. Download the file CTY-501.EXE from the CT BBS at 508-460-8877.
I will upload it Friday afternoon, 2/10, but it may take a couple
of days for K1EA to move it to the public area, and include it with
UPD-CT.
6. Download the file CTY-501.ZIP from the DX BBS at 502-898-8864.
I will upload it Friday afternoon 2/10.

Just a quick reminder that in the ADRS WPX there are some problems with the
WF1B software. There is a fix and it should be applied (correctly!).
If your QSO points is greater than about 2 times QSO then you probably have
a problem. e.g. on 80 meters 200 Qso isn't going to yield 1,000 Qso points.
Please double check the logs before submitting them. It will save us lots of
time fixing the mistakes!

They are right!
I remember one year when we had one of the usual Texas thunderstorms at
N5AU. None of the 20+ towers were touched, but the SE Beverage disintegrated
into little,black inch long bits of melted wire. Any wire antenna is at
risk in a thunderstorm.

Joan Sauri, C31US, president of the URA has asked me to announce that for the
month of March, 1995, Andorran amateurs who are members of the URA (Unio de

Here's a question that we several of us started to discuss at a recent
get-together. Has anyone found a way to eliminate rain static on high
antennas. I know that several of us that have stacks on say 20 meters
with the top antenna at about 120-140 feet and the bottom antenna at
70-90 feet have noticed that when a good amount or rain starts to fall
the top antenna becomes relatively useless because of the high amount
of static noise caused by the rain. The bottom antenna remains
practically immune to this noise, however.
Has anyone found a solution to this problem? Inquiring minds want to
know. By the by, I have a 2 ele 40 mounted about 8-10 feet below the
top 20 and it appears to have the same problem. So attempting to shield
the antenna with a higher one over it won't work.
I will be gald to compile the possible solutions and put them out on
the reflector.
