My 4-year-old son Erik was primed and ready again this SQUint.
The night before, he was rattling off the exchange from LAST TIME,
without being prompted! On Saturday morning he popped off four
contacts in the first ten minutes, and I thought "wow- he's hot
today". But by the fifth contact he decided it was more fun to
set his age as five, sing his color and state, and tell people his
name was Larry! It was clearly break time, and he wanted to play
outside so I turned things off. Approaching 1900Z, it was MOM(!)
who coaxed him back for one more contact, which he did. Results:
N6IP Sarah 3 Pink CA
WA6RMM Mac 85 (!) Blue CA
AA5BT Lindsay 10 Green TX
N6TR Teresa 4 Blue OR
N7ENU Alex 8 Blue OR

Observations:
1) What a nice, patient guy Mac was - working the kids at age 85!
2) It's interesting that Mom displayed a greater sense of urgency
about this whole thing than Dad did.
3) Glad to see the QSY rule eliminated; more QSO's before his
attention went elsewhere.
4) No amount of processor-twiddling could accommodate the rapid
changes of amplitude from whisper to mutter to sing to yell.
I gather others had the same problem, since there was some
really bad audio out there, overdriven and hard to copy. We'll
all have to work on that...of course, WE never overdrive when
we're operating ourselves. :-)

I had been laboring through the BS7H pileup, and watching
the clock tick past 1800 GMT. I finally gave up at 1830, got
daugher Ashley into the radio room, went through some
quick refresher training, and had her go at it. After her
experience gained by working KH6BZF in the ARRL phone
test, I knew she'd be ready to take on any kid! Well, her
interest waned (actually, she wasn't very interested from
the beginning!) and she agreed to make "just 2 contacts."
I then brought in back-up operator Ricky, and he grabbed
that mike and went at it just like a seasoned Contester.
He got the exchange down pat, used elevated vocal levels
to be heard, and was very relaxed about the entire situation.
The boy's a natural....
I had a great time, I get the bonus for positive comments from
the spouse, but I missed the diaper changing bonus because
I'm not old enough for DEPENDS yet!! hi hi
Here are the specifics:
Rig: TS690s, SB-220 amplifier (tired from calling BS7H)
Antenna: 3 element 20m monobander at 80 ft
Logging program: my right hand on a yellow notepad
Operators:
Ashley/ 7 / Red / South Carolina
Ricky / 10 / Red / South Carolina
Scores:
Ashley: 2 QSOs * 2 states (worked WA7FOE and AA7BG)
Ricky: 4 QSOs * 4 mults (3 states, 1 province; worked
AA5BT, N6TR, N7SEZ and 4X1EL/VE7)
Total operating time: 16 minutes
Notes:
1. Ricky was amazed that there really are other DADS as
old as I am (sorry about that, Tree!).
2. I think we need to get Ricky introduced to AA5BT's op
Lindsay. Talk about some harmonics.... ;-} (Ricky would
kill me if he knew I posted this)
3. Ashley is more interested in CW. She likes to
play with "the clicker" (her word for electronic keyer)
but is NOT interested in a microphone.

Thanks to K9VV for voicing feelings I had listening to the "experts" on
14.195 and elsewhere. If these guys would like to get off their butts and
put on a New One, then tell us all how it should be done, I'll listen.
Until then, they are just another blight on Amateur Radio in general.
SSB - The good news is that any idiot can use a microphone. The bad news
is that they often do.
At least with CW, by the time you get all those "busy consonants" out,
most everybody has lost interest!
My only question about the crew is "where do they go next?"

My favorite trick is something I heard F2CW doing on one of those crazy
trips like 3Y0PI. Perhaps it had been done before, but it was my first
time to hear it. At the end of every fifth QSO or so he would say
3Y0PI UP 2 S I X T Y T H R E E
and while all the lids were calling UP 2, you could get him on the first
or second call on 063. And if too many people found him on 063, he
would listen on some other frequency, like S E V E N T Y T W O.
Contesting is much better than DXing anyhow in that you don't have to
maintain state for longer than one weekend; once the contest is over,
your DX totals reset to 0.

Alyssa was ready to Contest early Saturday....starting
around 1400z she started asking if "Her contest was gonna

promptly took one look at it and asked if we could turn it
ON. So Alyssa was the first to try out the new

I'm sorry for any busted info, but with a 5 yr old, I don't
think it really matters...as long as they have fun!
I apologize to NQ0I for the banshee scream that was probably
heard from my 15mo old son Chase. He burst into the room
and attempted a microphone take-over in the middle of the
QSO. A small scuffle interrupted things for a moment until
Mom whisked him away...to the sound of more banshee screams.
But, I do need to say thanks to Chase for providing a 30
Point bonus for 1 diaper change during the SquINT.
All in all it was fun, hope to hear you all again in the
next SquINT!
REMINDER
Please let me know if you have a picture of your SquINT ops
at the operating position. I would like to get a few
pictures for possible print in an article about the
SquINT. Also please post your log if possible...even if you
could only get your operator on for SWL time.
