I have just received a flyer from the Club de Radio-Experimentadores de
Nicaragua (CREN), host of this year's FRACAP (Federacion de Clubes de
Radioaficionados de Centroamerica y Panama) Convention.
To publicize the Convention they are having a contest, and here are the
details:
Time: 9 July 1995, 1200 to 2400 GMT
Band/Mode: 40 meter phone only
Classification: Single Operator only
Exchange: serial number beginning with 0001 plus Report (RS) plus the
time. (Yes, you tell the other station what time you are logging him at).
Points: Everybody works everybody. Each QSO counts one point except:
-- TG, YS, HR, TI, HP: two points (except portables from outside Central
America who happen to be operating in Central America still count only
one point)
-- YN: five points
-- Station YN1YN (CREN club station): 25 points
-- Station YN0FRACAP (FRACAP Club Station): 35 points..
Multiplier: Add all your points up and multiply by 35 for final score:

The prizes will be awarded at the FRACAP Convention Banquet in Managua,
16 Sept. 1995 (The Convention will be held Sept. 15, 16, 17 in
Managua. Convention details can be obtained by fax from fax number
74973 in Managua).
Comment: OK, I know. You have to speak Spanish and most of the
activity will be below 7100 on SSB, so how can a US station participate?
Well if you want to practice your Spanish for CQWW and all those LU
novices on 10 meters, here is the perfect opportunity. Just pick out a
clear spot above 7153 (remember if you are below 7153 your sidebands go
over the sub-band limit) and call:
"Say-coo con-COORS-so frah-cup"
a few times and sign your call in Spanish (remember, FCC rules say you
also have to ID in English every ten minutes or at the end of each QSO even
when QSO'ing in Spanish).
To the first station that answers you, after passing the required
information, ask him in Spanish:
"Oye, colega, me puedes dar una manito? Estoy cogido aqui arriba y no
puedo bajar por debajo de los 7150 KHz. Puedes decir a los colegas
mas que aqui estoy arriba QRV para que me vengan y llamen"
(Hey OM, can you give me a hand? I'm stuck up here above 7150 and I
can't go down further. Can you tell the guys down below that I'm up
here and waiting for them to come up here and give me a call?)
It works like a charm. I have worked the Colombian and Venezuelan
contests like this for years with great success, and last year I got a
beautiful plaque from FRACAP for being the US winner, thanks to Nao,
NX1L, who handcarried it back from the FRACAP Convention in Guatemala.
